This flat 2” x 2.5” x 1” thick aerogel mirror made at Odhner Holograhics weighs 27 grams. The aerogel weighs 13 grams. The mirror weighs 14 grams. It could weigh a great deal less. The aerogel has a great deal of compressive with little sheer strength strength while the metal mirror has a great deal of sheer strength. Together, they make a mirror system that has sheer and compressive strength.
This mirror system can be curved to make an ultra powerful light weight telescopes for UAVs to enable them to stay in the air longer. This system is 6.7X lighter than the equivalent size in glass.
